IDOLATRY TODAY
What the visible church has done today is exactly parallel to what Israel did
in her day. They have sought other gods, particularly the gods of the nations
round about them. In order to see this more clearly, we must first define what
idolatry is, and how it manifests its various forms in our modern society.
"Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
(Exodus 20:3 AV)
There are two initial considerations in understanding this Commandment.
Firstly, the Command is given in the second person singular. In other words,
God would have each one of us take this commandment as if it were spoken to us
by name. Although it is spoken to an entire group, its force deals with each
soul personally. Secondly, the Commandment leads all other Commandments. The
Commandment against idolatry leads the list because it is the foundation of all
True Religion. God alone is worthy to be sanctified in our hearts, and
He alone should be worshipped. Because of His Majesty and Excellence, He alone
deserves Preeminence.
Furthermore, we must understand that, since God is excellent and
Supernaturally Divine, His Law is Supernatural and Divine. All the attributes
that the Scriptures give God, they also give to His Law.
1. God is Good. cf Psalm 73:1
The Law is Good. cf Romans 7:12 1 Timothy 1:8
2. God is Holy cf Psalm 99:9
The Law is holy Romans 7:12
3. God is light. cf 1 John 1:5
The Law is light. cf Proverbs 6:23
4. God is a lamp. cf 2 Samuel 22:29
The Law is a lamp. cf Psalm 119:105
5. God is the way, the truth, and the life. Cf John 14:6
Isaiah 30:21 Isaiah 35:8 Proverbs 12:28
The Law is also identified as the way, truth and life
cf Proverbs 6:23 Psalm 119:30 John 17:17
6. God is Righteous cf Daniel 9:14
The Law is Righteous cf Deuteronomy 4:8
7. God is a Shield cf Psalm 84:11
The Law is a Shield cf Psalm 91:4
8. God is eternal cf Genesis 21:33 Psalm 93:2
The Law is eternal cf 1 Peter 1:25
9. God is our Guide cf Psalm 48:14
The Law is our guide. cf Psalm 73:24
We can easily see by these examples that there is a very intimate
relationship between the Lawgiver and His Law. Both are to be regarded
reverently. In today’s church, many place man’s wisdom on par with God’s
Law. This is blatant idolatry. Whenever, man’s word is given
the same significance as God’s Word, by definition, it is
