Objection: Unlike Washington and Adams, Thomas
Jefferson refused to issue proclamations calling
for a day of prayer, fasting or Thanksgiving.
Answer: Jefferson made no attempts to hide his beliefs. According to Burton
Stevenson’s The Home Book of Quotations-Classical & Modern (New York:,
Dodd, Mead and Company, 1997), Tyron Edwards, DD., The New Dictionary of
Thoughts – A Cyclopedia of Quotations (Garden City, N.Y. Hanover House, 1852,
revised), Herbert Lockyer, Last Words of Saints and Sinners, Grand Rapids, MI:
Kregal 1969), Steven Abbott Northrop’s, Life of Jefferson, and a Cloud of
Witnesses, (Portland OR. American Heritage Ministries, Bulverde, TX .,1987) and Northrop's,
Library of American Literature, Vol. III, ibid, the following Thomas
Jefferson quotes are cited:
“Of all the systems of morality, ancient or modern,
which have come under my observation, none appear to me so pure as that of
Jesus.”
“The doctrines
which flowed from the lips of Jesus himself are within the comprehension of a
child; but thousands of volumes have not yet expanded the Platonims engrafted on
them.”
“Had the doctrines of Jesus been preached always pure
as they came from his lips, the whole civilized world would now have been
Christians.
I have always said, I always will say, that the studious perusal of the Sacred
Volume, will make better citizens, better fathers, and better husbands.”
“There is only one God, and He is all prefect.
There is a future state of rewards and
punishments. To love God with
all the heart and thy neighbor as thyself is the sum of all. I
have little doubt that the whole country will soon be rallied to the unity of
our Creator, and I hope, to the pure doctrines of Jesus also.”
According to Adrenne Koch and William Peden, The
Life and Selected Writings of Thomas Jefferson, (N.Y. Random House, 1994) and
Our Christian Heritage” Letter from Plymouth Rock (Marlborough, NH: The
Plymouth Rock Foundation) Thomas Jefferson’s March 4, 1805 National Prayer
for Peace is quite accurate. (See The Reformed Analysis July 2000 issue) Thus,
we see that Jefferson encouraged the nation in the precepts of the Christian
Religion.
CONCLUSION
There can be little doubt as to the authenticity of The
American Republic being based upon the Christian Religion. Furthermore, there
can be little argument which seeks to preclude the influence of the Scriptures
as a basis of Leadership character and policy of the Framers and Founding
Fathers.
May God see fit to
re-establish a Godly Nation through Godly Leaders that fear not men, simply
because they fear God, and desire to keep His Commandments.
